An Excerpt from Table Talk: Jesus and a Modern Christian:

Characters:

Jesus (calm, warm, straightforward)
Chris (a sincere but typical, politically charged MAGA Christian)

Both parts can be played by any gender. Jesus should be in a traditional white robe and beard, looking exactly like we expect.

A Chick-fil-A dining room. Chris is at a table wearing a red cap and reading a Bible.

Jesus enters.

Jesus: Chris.
Chris: (startled) Jesus?
Jesus: Yes, Chris, it is I, the Lord. I’m pleased to see you studying your Bible, here at Chick-fil-A, among fellow Christians. (Jesus gestures at the other tables.)
Chris: (laughing nervously) Lord… you’ve come back?
Jesus: I told you I would. But in many ways, I’m always around… (He gestures at the seat.) May I?
Chris: Yes! Please, sit down. My Bible study group will be here any minute. They’ll be so excited.
Jesus: Chris, tell me, did humanity remember what I told them?
Chris: (holding up the Bible) Of course! We wrote it all down so we wouldn’t forget.
Jesus: That’s good. And are you doing what I said?
Chris: Absolutely. If you told us to do it, we’re doing it.
Jesus: All of it?
Chris: Of course, everything you said to do, we’re doing it!
Jesus: You’re doing the most important thing I commanded?
Chris: (confidently) Yes! Hate gays!
Jesus: Excuse me?
Chris: Stop abortion and protect the sanctity of life!
Jesus: (shocked speechless) What’s that, then?
Chris: Make America Great Again!
Jesus: What are you talking about, Chris? I’m asking, if you want to be my follower, what did I tell you to do?
Chris: (losing his confidence) Preserve the sanctity of marriage and only listen to male preachers?
Jesus: (gestures to the Bible) It’s in there. Look it up.
Chris: (flustered, frantically flipping pages) Uh… “An eye for an eye?” God bless America?
Jesus: Keep going.
Chris: Refuse to bake a cake for a gay marriage? Don’t let gay people marry? Support Israel no matter how many children it kills?
Jesus: (Jesus reacts to the last sentence, and then patiently shakes his head) No. None of those things.
Chris: (hesitates) Refuse to prescribe certain medicines?
Jesus: (shakes his head silently)
Chris: Demand prayer in public schools? Put a Bible on every teacher’s desk and the 10 Commandments in every classroom?
Jesus: Now you’re getting warm. What’s the greatest commandment, Chris?
Chris: (shrugs) Vote Republican? Protect our borders?
Jesus: No. It starts with, “Love…” Any idea?
Chris: (shakes his head silently)
Jesus: “Love God… with all your heart, soul, and mind… and love your neighbor… as yourself?” Does any of that sound familiar?
Chris: It’s not ringing a bell. Are you sure that’s in there?
Jesus: Let me help you: “Love God. Love others.”
Chris: (stares vacantly)
Jesus: Care for the poor, the widows, the sick, the prisoners. Feed the hungry. Welcome the stranger. I repeated it again and again. People heard me saying it, some even wrote down what I said.
